Who must join MTD ITSA and when

Understanding the Scope

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies across the UK—England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland—and affects individuals who are:

  • Sole traders (self-employed)
  • Landlords (owning UK rental property)

Income Thresholds and Timelines

  • From 6 April 2026: You must follow MTD ITSA rules if your combined trading and property income exceeded £50,000 in the previous tax year (GOV.UK: ITSA requirements 2026).
  • From 6 April 2027: Threshold lowers to £30,000.
  • From 2028 (subject to legislation): Proposed threshold of £20,000 (Extension announced). Always check for the latest updates nearer your actual deadline.
Only your share is counted: for jointly-let properties or partnerships, only your proportional income is used for the threshold.

ABOUT THE GUIDE

Introduction

From April 2026, many UK landlords and sole traders must begin digital record-keeping and quarterly online reporting under MTD ITSA—a significant shift affecting property owners, small businesses, and their advisors. This guide is designed for individuals subject to these new requirements, as well as bookkeeping firms supporting clients through the transition. Using up-to-date official evidence, this workbook avoids legal jargon and offers plain-language steps, timepoints, and checklists to help you move from old-style paper or spreadsheet approaches to approved digital workflows, clarify your obligations, and smoothly pass your first quarterly update deadline. Work through the chapters at your own pace—each teaches a concrete step in the migration process.
